The series will arrive by Halloween 2022
Breaking news from Marvel Studios ! The lead cast member for their Halloween special Werewolf by Night has been locked in, and it will Coco and Old star Gael García Bernal. The character was initially designed by Stan Lee, Jack Russell and Roy Thomas, and was later incorporated into the Marvel roster by Gerry Conway and Mike Ploog.
The character’s history
What sets the Werewolf by Night apart from classic werewolves is that he doesn’t need a full moon to transform. Nor does his judgements or humanity get clouded by the animal’s wild instincts. The initial character was remodelled by Taboo, Benjamin Jackendoff and Scott Eaton into a new character called Jake Gomez. Gomez belonged to the Hopi Native American tribe, which was cursed with lycanthropy (shape-shifting into wolves). Jake uses his powers to fight against an evil pharmaceutical company.
A Werewolf by Night tried to take flight in 2005, but fell apart. The character had only made brief appearances in shows like The Super Hero Squad Show, Ultimate Spider-Man and Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. after that. But now that Marvel is beefing up its roster after Avengers: Endgame, a new dawn on these forgotten heroes has arrived.
Possible crossovers
The character had crossed paths with Moon Knight and Blade in the comics, among many other heroes. Both these characters have series coming up, with Oscar Isaac as Moon Knight and Mahershala Ali as Blade. These three characters have worked together in the supernatural squad Midnight Sons and combated ancient evils. In fact, we can even expect a Midnight Sons project in the future. Since Moon Knight and Blade will be arriving soon, we can even expect an appearance by the Werewolf by Night.
