The French star was part of numerous French and Hollywood projects
Gaspard Ulliel, a French actor who has acted in films like Saint Laurent, Hannibal Rising, and Marvel’s Moon Knight, has died aged 37. The actor was involved in a skiing accident in the Alps.
The news was announced by local broadcaster France Bleu, who reported that Ulliel had crashed with another skier at a crossing point and suffered head trauma. He was rushed to the hospital, but the other skier was not hospitalized. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Roles and accomplishments
Gaspard Ulliel was a promising actor to both the French and Hollywood film industries. He debuted with television roles before getting a minor role in 2001’s Brotherhood of the Wolf, which starred Vincent Cassel and Monica Bellucci. After working in critically-acclaimed French movies like Strayed and Summer Things, he got to star as the romantic lead in A Very Long Engagement, a role which won him a Cesar Award for most promising actor.
He then starred as young Hannibal Lecter in the prequel movie Hannibal Rising, and scored a second Cesar nomination for starring as Yves Saint Laurent in his biopic Laurent. He finally won the prestigious award for Xavier Dolan’s It’s Only the End of the World.
Tributes poured in for Gaspard Ulliel
The Cannes festival director Thierry Fremaux said to Variety that Ulliel belonged to the new generation of actors who were part of making tomorrow’s French cinema. Director Dolan shared an Instagram tribute, saying the news was painful and that his whole being transformed (my) life and that he will always love him for it.
Gaspard Ulliel will now appear posthumously in Moon Knight, where he played the villain Midnight Man. A Disney spokesperson spoke to Variety, and gave their condolences to Gaspard’s family.
He is survived by his singer-model girlfriend Gaëlle Piétri and a son.
