This is a movie you don’t want to miss
Calm with Horses is a critically acclaimed Irish crime-thriller, directed by newcomer Nick Rowland, whose box office run was affected by the impending covid-19 crisis that broke out in March. But for those who missed it, rest easy as it’s available on Netflix right now.
The story
The movie received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, and this role might have just kicked off lead star Cosmo Jarvis’s career. Jarvis is a British musician-turned-actor.
He plays the role of Douglas ‘Arm’ Armstrong, who was a former boxer and currently a hired gun for the drug dealing Devers family. From the get-go, we see that Arm is someone who has lost all hope for himself but has hopes on reconciling with Ursula (Niamh Algar) with whom he has a five-year-old son Jack (Kiljan Moroney), who has autism.
The third lead is Barry Keoghan, who is also an actor who shows great promise and has starred in Nolan’s Dunkirk, and is set to star in Marvel’s Eternals and Matt Reeves’s The Batman. Keoghan stars as Dympna who is an underboss for the Devers family, and can be called Arm’s friend, but is willing to sell him out if things get rough.
For a first-time director, Nick Rowland did a great job in adapting this story from Colin Barrett’s short story collection Young Skins. The three leads do a fantastic job with Jarvis powering through each scene and Algar and Keoghan lending support as the opposition he has to face throughout his journey.
While the movie’s initial stages are a bit lackluster, as the audience, our faith in the movie will grow by the minute.
