Something that beats Squid Game has to be more brutal and terrifying than Squid Game
Netflix’s Squid Game has found a competitor, and it is another South Korean Netflix drama called Hellbound. The drama dropped on November 19th and was able to top the ratings in 80 different countries within 24 hours of its premiere, and zoomed past Squid Game as the streamer’s most-watched show.
Now, let’s see what the show is about.
The story
The premise is unique, but scary. Out of nowhere, a scary, white, and huge face with an equally eerie voice materializes in front of people and give them the date when they die. And as stated, three Hulk-sized black brutes appear on the designated day and beats the person to death, with each beatdown setting their body on fire and giving a full-body incineration in the end. People try running and hiding, but the brutes always found them.
It is not just the three brutes that are spreading terror, it is the realization that somebody out there is deciding everyone’s fate. This turns society upside down, as one can expect. Conspiracy theories spread like wildfire, and those who say they know the reason why this phenomenon is happening is elevated to messianic statuses.
Will Hellbound be bigger than Squid Game?
Squid Game should be given its due diligence. It is what finally showed the beauty of Korean Dramas to the rest of the world. K-dramas had loyal followers, but it grew exponentially after Squid Game. Hellbound might prove to be a bigger hit than that, but there is equal chance of Squid Game still being on top, thanks to the outfits and the memes.
In conclusion, Hellbound is brilliant. It is a truly wonderful drama, that portrays the collapse of society, and demonic forces at play.
