Mighty Ducks: Emilio Estevez Gets Replaced by Josh Duhamel in the Sports Series

A new head coach is here!

Disney has introduced a new coach for their show The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers. Emilio Estevez, who had played the role of Coach Gordon Bombay since the franchise’s inception, had exited the show recently. Josh Duhamel is now the new coach, who will teach The Mighty Ducks.

Estevez’s reason for exit

Variety had reported that Estevez, 59, left the show due to a disagreement on the COVID-19 vaccine requirement. However, Estevez clarified the rumours and stated that it was a “good old-fashioned contract dispute.” He further added that he’s not anti-vaxx and has taken the pandemic very seriously. In fact, he is often teased for his abundance of caution, he said to Deadline.

Estevez had also contracted the virus in March 2020 and spent a major portion of the year with its prolonged symptoms. He spoke about his health and safety concerns back in August 2020 and the producers assured his safety.

His former reps had also warned him about “possible consequences and legal jeopardy” if he didn’t return. Estevez concluded that the legacy of the franchise was more important to him than his own health, but creative differences caused him to exit.

Duhamel, 49, will star as Gavin Cole, a former NHL player-turned-coach. His character was described as “inspirational, charming, and hardcore.” He is also described that applies hockey metaphors to life. After his NHL career, Cole runs an intense summer hockey institute where The Mighty Ducks will play in season 2.

The 10-episode series premiered in March 2021, nearly 30 years after the release of the original films. The first movie released in 1992, followed by a two sequels in 1994 and 1996 respectively. The third sequel came in the form of an animated series.

A premiere date has not been set for the show, but we can expect it to arrive in late 2022 or early 2023.
