Ivory will star as Alysia Yeoh, Barbara’s best friend
DC’s Batgirl has just casted a new character. Ivory Aquino, known for Tales of the City and When they See Us has joined the HBO Max film.
Batgirl, which stars Leslie Grace as the titular superhero, has already started shoots. It is directed by Bad Boys for Life director duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah.
Aquino will star as Alysia Yeoh, a bartender and Barbara Gordon’s best friend. She is also the first major transgender character to appear in a live-action movie from DC Comics. Alysia was first introduced in Batgirl #1 in 2011, and was Barbara’s roommate when she moved out of her father’s home. She describes herself to somewhat of an activist. They remain good friends throughout the storyline, even though various situations happen that forces Barbara to live separately.
Aquino is a star in the making, and have appeared in the Netflix series When They See Us and Tales of the City. She then came in ABC’s miniseries When We Rise and Blue Bloods, among other shows.
Batgirl production is going on in full swing, with many behind-the-scenes photos being shared. Last week, we got to see Grace’s superhero costume, which closely resembled the New 52 comics. The story will also be heavily inspired from the 2011 comic run, now that Ivory’s character was introduced.
The film additionally stars Michael Keaton as Batman, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, and Brendan Fraser as Firefly. Jacob Scipio was also casted in an unknown role. Fraser was also photographed while filming the movie. The movie was written by Christina Hodson and produced by Kristin Burr, along with Warner Brothers. Batgirl will be part of the new line-up for the DCEU, which will begin with The Flash movie.
