He has recounted the time when his second wife Shirley Collie found out that he had a child with another woman. He wrote, “Shirley saw a bill from a Houston hospital. I tried to play it off as no big dealĀ I told her that I had to go to the hospital for something minor.”

He continued, “Shirley wasn’t buying that for one simple reason: The bill said the charges were for the birth of a baby girl, Paula Carlene, born to a Mrs. Connie Nelson.”
Of course, Shirley wanted to know who Connie Nelson was and that was when he had no choice but to admit that Connie was his girlfriend and Paula was their daughter. Nelson has been married to four women and has fathered seven children. He was married to Martha Matthews from 1952-1962 and had 3 children. He we’d Shirley in 1963 and divorced in 1971, and married Connie Kopeke in the same year. While married to Connie, he fell in love with makeup artist Ann Marie D’Angelo while starring on the movie Stagecoach in 1986.

He spoke about messing up yet another marriage. He admitted that his wandering ways were too much for a woman to put up with and said he regrets causing them pain, but he’s not making any excuses for it as love is love.
After divorcing Kopeke in 1988, he married D’Angelo in 1991, but he admitted that winning Annie over was a hard task as she made sure that his marriage was truly over before committing. They are still married and have two sons Lukas and Jacob Micah.
