Life and Career
Mariah was born on March 27, 1970 in Huntington, New York. Her heritage is African American, Afro-Venezuelan, and Irish. Her grandfather adopted the name “Carey” upon immigrating to New York, which was Nunez before.

From Childhood, she was passionate about arts and music, and started writing poems and songs while in high school. She graduated in 1987, and later befriended Gavin Christopher and Ben Margulies, whom she met at Harborfields. Together, they started composing songs with lyrics and music.
Her first self-titled album was release on June 12, 1990 and Columbia Records, whom she had associated with, spent $1 million promoting it. It went to become 9X platinum in the US and soon sold over 15 million copies worldwide. It became number one of the Billboard charts and she won her first Grammy for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
