The story might possibly end with this single season
Platinum End is a unique series that comes from writer Tsugumi Ohba and illustrator Takeshi Obata, the creators of Death Note. It debuted in Shueisha’s Jump Square magazine in November 2015 and ended in January 2021. Much like Death Note, Platinum End also gives us a thoughtful story that consists of numerous supernatural elements.
The series was animated in October 2021, and is now drawing to a close. But ahead of that, we got a new image.
The key visual and story
The image was shared by a Twitter account named Anime_TV Japan, and consisted of character posters of the six special individuals known as “God Candidates.”
Platinum End’s story revolves around an orphaned high school student named Mirai Kakehashi, who lives with his abusive uncle and aunt. After losing all hope for life, he decides to commit suicide but is saved by a mysterious presence. The presence reveals itself to be Nasse, a Guardian Angel who grants special powers to Mirai.
Nasse reveals that his uncle and aunt were responsible for the deaths of his parents, and Mirai decides to enact his newfound powers to bring them to justice. However, his journey was far from over. Nasse informs that God will retire in 999 days and the next person to take his place has to be selected. Mirai is forced to compete in a contest with 12 other candidates to become the next God.
Is it the end for Platinum End?
The manga consisted of 14 volumes, written over a span of almost 6 years. The anime has not revealed if they will continue after this season, and various rumours suggest that the story will be over with 24 episodes. The series is ongoing with new episodes dropping every week on Crunchyroll and Funimation.
