Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Director Plans to Create a Smaller Roster of Fighters in the Future!

Super Smash Bros. recently celebrated its third anniversary

Nintendo‘s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate had been trending for the past week as it celebrated its third anniversary. Work on the game has also come to a close, after introducing Sora, the main character from Kingdom Hearts. The game now boasts a huge line-up of 89 characters, and players have more than enough content to enjoy.

The team, who has been working on dishing out new updates for the game since 2018 can now take a break. The game’s director Masahiro Sakurai sat down for an interview with The Verge, and discussed all things Super Smash Bros.

What’s next?

Sakurai spoke about how the final version of Ultimate didn’t vary too much from what they had planned. He did admit that there were shortcomings, but has taken them as “lessons learned.” He was then asked if he would make another Super Smash Bros. game, and how he would change things up. The director said that he’s pondering over the questions himself, saying they’ve reached the limit as far as content and fighters go.

If he gets the opportunity to work on another game, he would like to make a smaller roster of characters, but they will have to see if fans are in favour of it. He also said that he was doing most of the work on his own, so that should be resolved.

Adapting more visions

Sakurai said that if they want the series to succeed in the future, he and his team should work to add more ideas instead of everyone depending on his solo vision. He said that this matter should be discussed with Nintendo if they were ever going to make another game.
