The collection of short stories from Neill Blomkamp is a true hidden gem
Oats Studios is an experimental series that first came on YouTube, before it found its way to Netflix. It released globally on Netflix October 1, and can be considered an underrated show. It’s comprised of short episodes, ranging from 21 to 4 minutes.
Its made by District 9 director Neill Blomkamp, who set up the indie studio in 2017, with the aim to distribute movies through YouTube and Steam. After it arrived on Netflix, it made its way to several top 10s in the UK, among other European countries.
Will there be a second volume?
There has been no updates for the past 10 months. The last episode to come from Oats Studios was “All My Sh*t”, which is also in Netflix. There are some videos that has not made its way to Netflix from YouTube, and they could form the second volume. A couple of such episodes include “Bad President” or “Praetoria.”
Blomkamp had spoken about some experimental features he’d like to include in the feature. He was interested to use “volumetric capture” in his movie Demonic, but had to go a different route. Demonic released in 2021 under the Oats Studio banner is a feature-length film.
Shorter projects
We won’t hear anything from Blomkamp as he’s busy with his next film, Inferno. The sci-fi thriller was delayed due to the pandemic, so the director won’t look to make more short episodes.
Another reason for Blomkamp to not create more episodes on the series was because YouTube still can’t always bring the same popularity that Netflix does. However, Netflix personally can invest in the studio and get the director to create more episodes. One such anthology series that Netflix bankrolled is Love, Death and Robots.
