Netflix Picked Up Bestselling Novel “The Night Agent” for an Adaptation!

New updates suggest that the show will begin production in early 2022

Netflix has greenlit another project based on a best-selling novel. It will adapt Matthew Quirk’s 2019 novel, The Night Agent with Emmy nominee Shawn Ryan as developer. The pilot episode will be directed by Seth Gordon, and Sony Television Studios will produce it. Both Ryan and Gordon has overall deals with Netflix.

The story will be an action-thriller, and will be sophisticated, with a character-driven plot. The protagonist is a low-level FBI agent who is stationed in the basement of the White House, next to a phone that never rings. But one night it does, and he’s thrust into a high octane and dangerous conspiracy that leaves a trail all the way to the Oval Office.

Ryan will be the showrunner, and will be the executive producer via his studio, Middkid Productions. Gordon will executive produce under his banner Exhibit A. The other executive producers are MiddKid Production’s Marney Hochman, Exhibit A’s Julia Gunn as well as Jamie Vanderbilt, William Sherak, Paul Neinstein and Nicole Tossou from Project X and David Beaubaire for Sunset Lane Media.

Ryan listed the book in the category of books that he has read, and decided to adapt for television. He had also written the pilot episode and left it out for studios to adapt. This was when Netflix swooped in and decided to adapt the project. Ten episodes were ordered by the streamer, and a report that came in October stated that production will begin in early 2022.

Ryan is the creator of the hit series The Shield, which ran for seven successful seasons. He is also the executive producer for CBS drama S.W.A.T., which he co-created.
