The show is currently a phenomenon due to its multiple Emmy wins and nominations
Apple TV+‘s sports-comedy series Ted Lasso will soon start rolling out its third season. The latest news confirms that season 3 will also contain 12 episodes, similar to season 2.
The series became a cultural phenomenon when it first released in 2020, and scored the most Emmy nominations as a freshman comedy series – the most since Glee in 2009. It’s wins include Outstanding Lead Actor in Comedy for Jason Sudeikis, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Brett Goldstein, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy for Hannah Waddingham, and the coveted Outstanding Comedy Series.
The next steps
Season 2 of Ted Lasso is currently ongoing, and the finale will air on October 8. The writers and cast renegotiated pay increases, and story writing for the third season has officially begun. The series was initially planned for three seasons, but rumours suggest that it’s planning on going beyond. Apple hopes to release season 3 in Summer 2022.
The cast and crew spoke in interviews backstage after scoring big at the Emmys. While speaking to IndieWire, writer Libby Hill asked what the episode count will be like for season 3. Both Sudeikis and creator Bill Lawrence confirmed that they will have 12 episodes, which their network asked for ahead of time.
Season 1 contained 10 episodes, and season 2 was also going for 10, but Apple later ordered two additional episodes. The new episodes were the Christmas one ‘Carol of the Bells,’ and the new one on Coach Beard, ‘Beard After Hours.’
Giving attention to side stories
Fans have been divided on the two additional episodes, as some didn’t like the show diverting from the main storyline.
But now that they have two extra episodes, the writers can choose to experiment with side story epsides and fleshing out the characters and their lives more. The writers mentioned that the show’s popularity didn’t change their plans for season 2, and with all the Emmy wins, they won’t be changing plans for season 3 either.
