The Handmaid’s Tale Renewed For the Sixth and Final Season at Hulu

Meanwhile, season five of The Handmaid’s Tale is coming out this month

Hulu’s critically-acclaimed drama series, The Handmaid’s Tale is close to its end. Ahead of the fifth season’s premiere, Hulu has announced that the series has been renewed for a sixth season, which will also be the last one.

The series premiered in 2017 and is based on Margaret Atwood’s book of the same name. It has received several awards, including an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series for the first season. Season two was based on Atwood’s spinoff novel named The Testaments.

The Handmaid’s Tale takes place in a dystopian fictional universe where the second American Civil War has taken place. The new world order established that infertile women should be forced into child-bearing slavery, and they were given the name “handmaid.” The protagonist is a handmaiden named June (Elisabeth Moss), who is looking for ways to escape her enslavement. She forms bonds with other handmaids and non-oppressed humans and fights for reformation.

Season four of The Handmaid’s Tale ended with the murder of Commander Waterford, and season five will see June facing the consequences for it. She might even return to Gilead, where she escaped from.

Showrunner’s Announcement

Series showrunner Bruce Miller announced via Deadline that it had been a true honor to adapt Margaret Atwood’s groundbreaking novel, and that they’re thrilled to bring a sixth and final season. He expressed his gratitude to Hulu and MGM for giving them a platform to tell their story, which has unfortunately remained relevant to the real world throughout its run. He also thanked fans for their support.

But there is good news. Even though The Handmaid’s Tale is ending, its spinoff The Testaments is in early development currently. The showrunners are likely to show us where the series will go in the finale of season six. Meanwhile, season five premieres on September 14 on Hulu.
