Ryan Reynolds Talks About Abandoned Deadpool Christmas Movie

The movie was written alongside his writing partners Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick

Ryan Reynolds is gearing up to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the highly anticipated Deadpool 3. The role gave his career a boost unlike any other, and pretty much made Reynolds a household name. The Merc with a Mouth even gave him a Golden Globe Award nomination. After making up numerous plans about the character’s future, everything was left alone as the Disney-Fox merger took place, and Deadpool had to go to a new home. Now Kevin Feige will be overseeing the character.

Ryan Reynolds on the scrapped movie

In a recent interview with The Big Issue, Ryan Reynolds spoke about what almost came to be. The actor, who is also a co-writer and producer in the Deadpool films, said that he had co-written a Deadpool Christmas movie along with original writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. However, it was scrapped when the merger took place. But Reynolds hasn’t closed the door on it fully because he said that maybe it will get made one day. It was not a musical, but a full Deadpool Christmas movie. He ended by saying, “So one day.”

Some might remember that Ryan Reynolds had released Once Upon a Deadpool, a re-cut version of the sequel that parodied The Princess Bride due to a subplot involving Fred Savage. The rating was also lowered to PG-13 so kids can watch it. It was met with mixed reviews, since many believed a character like Deadpool should not be watered down to become PG. But it did raise $51 million for the “F–k Cancer” campaign.

Success of a Christmas action film

We have had plenty of amazing holiday films with action. Examples include Lethal Weapon and Die Hard. This year, David Harbour will be starring as Santa Claus in Violent Night. So Ryan Reynolds making a Christmas Deadpool film will be certainly one for the holidays.

Deadpool 3 will be releasing on November 8, 2024.
