Taking a stand for herself, Ruby Rose lashes out at her haters who slammed her for Batwoman casting.
The 33-year-old Australian model-turned-actress is set to play the Batwoman in the upcoming American superhero television series on The CW. The world is set to witness its first on-screen lesbian superhero.
While this decision is revolutionary, it didn’t sit well with a certain group of people. In the comics, Batwoman’s alter-ego is a Jewish lesbian woman named Kate Kane, who is Bruce Wayne’s cousin, so people criticized the choice of casting Ruby as they believed that only a Jewish woman is fit to be the vigilante. The star was additionally slammed for being not lesbian enough to play a lesbian character. Kate Kane is a lesbian character in comics while Ruby has identified herself as gender-neutral in the past which again ruffled few feathers as according to some opinions, an actress identifying herself as gender-fluid can’t play the primary LGBTQ lead in a live-action superhero collection.
In an interview with Glamour Journal, the Orange Is the New Black actress put forth her point lashing out at her haters for all the unnecessary backlash that she has been receiving ever since her casting for the superhero series. Talking about the gender preferences of the character, Pitch Perfect 3 stars reminds people that the series isn’t about a gay superhero; it’s about a superhero who happens to be a Lesbian. Kate being gay is definitely part of who she is, and an integral part of the story in establishing why she’s not in the military anymore but that’s not the only point of the series.
Slamming her critics for debating over her origin, “Some people might not see themselves on the screen and therefore not see the point. But there are obviously plenty of shows for people like that. There are plenty of shows for white, old men,” the outspoken actress said.
This isn’t the first time that the actress is facing the brunt of online trolls. Her casting in the titular role has got her many haters due to which she even shut down her Twitter account and limited comments access on her posts to people she follows.
The series developed by Caroline Dries and Greg Berlanti will debut on October 6, 2019, on The CW.
