New ‘Cloverfield’ Movie in Development With J.J. Abrams on Board as Producer

Babak Anvari will be the director

Before Matt Reeves made The Batman, he directed Cloverfield, a thrilling movie about monsters invading Earth. The movie gave way to several sequels and spin-offs, and it currently looks like Hollywood wants to make more of them. According to Deadline, a new movie is being developed with Babak Anvari set to direct. Anvari is best known for the Persian horror film Under the Shadow. He went on to direct the thriller Wounds as well as the Netflix crime thriller I Came By.

About Cloverfield

Cloverfield will be a good project for Anvari to further enhance his love for horror thrillers. Unfortunately, not a lot of information is available regarding the project. We do not know if it’s going to be a prequel, a sequel, or an unrelated event in the Cloverfield anthology. It is also a first for Paramount to be announcing a title in the series even before it begins production. The past movies had working titles and was revealed much later.

The franchise has had huge potential since it began in 2008. The first movie is a prime example of inventive filmmaking, with marketing techniques and the internet being used to further pique audiences’ interest.

The first movie greatly surpassed expectations and was a major exposure for director Matt Reeves. It earned $40 million on opening week, and grossed over $170 million worldwide. It was made with a mediocre budget of $25 million. New York City under a kaiju attack, being broadcasted via video cameras became a huge thing. The following films showcased an apocalyptic world, minus the kaijus.

Aside from Abrams, the new Cloverfield will have Hannah Minghella and Jon Cohen as co-producers. Reeves will join as an executive producer, along with Drew Goddard and Bryan Burk.
