Indie movies are gaining popularity by the year, and this movie gets added to one of the 2020’s must watch list
A24 had a golden 2019 after making movies like “The Souvenir,” “The Farewell,” “The Lighthouse,” “The Last Black Man in San Fransisco,” and “Uncut Gems, “among a few other films. The name has been gaining more recognition in the Hollywood industry, and they have kicked off 2020 with the Kelly Reichardt directorial First Cow. Reichardt is back in the captain’s chair after 2016’s Certain Women. First Cow had already been premiered at the 2019 Telluride Film Festival and has received rave reviews.
What is the movie about?
The movie is based on the novel The Half-Life by Jonathan Raymond and is set during the 1800s and stars John Nagari, who plays a skilled cook who has joined a gang of fur trappers in the Oregon region. There, he makes friends with a Chinese immigrant, played by Orion Lee, and the two hatch a plan to start a business, but the success of the business will depend on the involvement of a nearby wealthy landowner’s milking cow, who is renowned in that area.
It is a wonderful story that explores a friendship between two unlikely people who go on a journey to the Pacific Northwest, them facing failure, and overcoming obstacles together. We get to see an early, less developed America and see a lot of natural beauty and mankind’s association with it. First, Cow has managed to capture everything in a very beautiful manner.
Aside from First Cow, A24 will be releasing Saint Maud, which is a psychological horror movie directed by Ross Glass and stars Morfydd Clark.
First Cow has been released on select theaters from March 6.
