Downton Abbey: A New Era Trailer Teases Maggie Smith’s Mysterious Past

What do we know so far about Smith’s Violet Crawley?

The first teaser for the sequel film Downton Abbey: A New Era was released recently, and serves as the second feature film after the critically acclaimed series came to an end. The show ran on ITV in the UK for 6 seasons, and US audiences got to watch it in PBS. It tells the story of the noble Crawley family in the 1900s, and their domestic staff at their country estate Downton Abbey. A movie of the same name released in 2019 after the show wrapped up in 2015, and we are on to the second sequel.

The teaser which was released by Focus Features begins with an admission by Violet Crawley (Smith), who says that she had met a man years ago, who came into possession of a villa in the south of France. Then we get glimpses of this supposed villa, as well as scenes from Tom Branson’s second wedding, and the returning cast members Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Laura Carmichael, and Jim Carter. The era is now close to the 1930s.

The trailer ends with Violet dismissing her statement, saying, “And with that, I will say goodnight and leave you to discuss my mysterious past.” Who is she referring to, and has this person ever made an appearance in the series? The movie can give us more clues.

The new movie has a several fresh faces, which includes Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, and Dominic West. Apart from the different location and wedding, we have no idea what the new movie will be about. But since the movie is being directed by BAFTA and EMMY-nominated director Simon Curtis, and written and produced by the original creator Julian Fellowes, we can expect it to be great. Downton Abbey: A New Era will release on March 18, 2022.
