Adrien Brody Talks About his Role on HBO’s ‘Succession,’ his Spars with Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong

“I had to come in and swim with the Sharks”

Succession season 3 is officially underway on HBO, and episode 4 showed the debut a surprising adversary.

Adrien Brody, known for King Kong, Peaky Blinders, and the recent The French Dispatch stars as activist investor Josh Aaronson. In his first appearance, he was able to bring together patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox) and son Kendall (Jeremy Strong) in the same room. This was the first time Logan and Kendall were brought together after the latter’s backstabbing in the season 2 finale of Succession.

In a character interview, Adrien Brody says that Josh is someone who is very conscious and aware of his environment, and his cunning nature makes up for a good game of cat and mouse between the show’s leads.

In the show, Aaronson urges Logan and Kendall to have the meeting on his private island, and he even leverages his 3 percent holding in Waystar Royco in order to make the father and son bond a little, and get some stock buyback in the process.

Brody had been a long-time fan of Succession himself, and had worked with the show’s producer Adam McKay on HBO’s Los Angeles Lakers. Brody said that he brought his own ideas to the character, and that it was a “collaborative” process.

Will Josh return?

Continuing on his character, Brody said that Josh seems “nicer” to him, and yet, there is a selfishness on how he toys with the other characters, and is willing to think up silly schemes to see if a bond truly exists between father and son.

And on his possible return, Brody says that he surely hopes to. His character is far too interesting to be used on just one episode, no matter how pivotal it can be.

Succession airs on Sunday nights on HBO, and is available to stream at HBO Max.
