The series will be available on three languages – Korean, Japanese and English
Apple TV+ has released first look images and release date for their new series Pachinko. The story will be based on the best-selling novel by Korean American author Min Jin Lee.
The drama series will consist of eight episodes, and will release weekly on the streaming platform from March 25, 2022. A trailer is imminent in the coming weeks.
The story
While an official synopsis is not provided, Pachinko‘s brief description states that the it will be an unforgettable story of war and peace, love and loss, triumph, and reckoning. However, thanks to the novel, we get a much bigger idea of what the story will be about.
Pachinko is told in three parts, and each part takes place in a different generation. A young lady named Sonja is the protagonist of the novel, but the story of how her parents met is also discussed in the other parts. Each generation has had their lives affected by the political background of Korea.
The story will take place within Korea and on foreign waters such as Japan and the United States. Due to that, it will be available in the Japanese and English languages as well.
Themes discussed
Pachinko is, at its core, a love story. However, it shed light into many important themes such as racism and stereotypes. We get to know more about the experiences Koreans had in Japan in the World War II era. Then we see how the Japanese occupation in Korean territories brought about huge changes in both countries’ traditions and cultures. We see peoples’ lives getting turned upside down by forces that are out of their control.
Soo Hugh (The Killing, The Terror) is on board as the writer, showrunner, and executive producer of Pachinko. The series stars Lee Min Ho, Jin Ha, Soji Arai, Minha Kim, Inji Jeong, Steve Sanghyun Noh, Kaho Minami, Junwoo Han, Anna Sawai, Jimmi Simpson, Yu na Jeon, and Eun Chae Jung.
