Dallas Sting was meant to be an inspirational sports drama based on the true story of a women’s soccer team from Texas city. In 1984, the team went to China to compete against some of the world’s biggest teams. Matthew McConaughey was to play Bill Kinder, a Texan man with no experience in soccer coaching, but still coached the team comprising of high-school girls and competing in a 19-and-under competition. The team called themselves the Sting, named after the iconic Robert Redford movie. Kinder accompanied the team to Australia, Japan, China, and finally Italy for the championship game. It happened at a time when President Ronald Reagan was opening up relations to China.

In a report by The Hollywood Reporter, Skydance canceled it after receiving “disturbing allegations” about the movie’s authenticity. They launched an investigation and found them to be serious enough to pull the plug on the whole project.
