Owing to the pandemic streaming services are reaping the most rewards
Netflix was one of the many streaming sites where viewership skyrocketed due to the coronavirus pandemic and and new subscribers have grown twice as many as what has been forecasted. Due to this, new releases also got more views. Mark Wahlberg starrer Spenser Confidential, which was a box office disaster, was seen more by 85 million subscribers within the initial month of its release, which made it the most watched movie in Netflix.
Second place has been taken by La Casa De Papel, aka Money Heist with 65 million viewers. Third place has been taken by the docu-series Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness with 64 million views.
Other shows
Coming up in fourth place is the unscripted and unique dating reality show Love is Blind with 30 million, and at fourth place is Ozark season 3 with 29 million. All the statistics have been collected 28 days after the show starts streaming.
The numbers are collected based on a new methodology developed by Netflix earlier this year, where if a show is watched by the subscriber for two minutes, that counts as a view. While the time limit is very short, that is enough for a viewer to keep watching. This method is currently used by YouTube and BBC iPlayer as well.
India has significantly contributes to these numbers. If you see the trending posts and memes about Money Heist on social media, you would understand that it’s trending. Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos also stated about Money Heist‘s success in India.
Despite the pandemic continuing, Netflix has confirmed that they have a solid lineup set for 2020 and 2021. So expect a lot of new shows and movies.
