HBO Releases Trailer for ‘Undercurrent: The Disappearance of Kim Wall’ Based on a Journalist’s Disappearance

The true-crime documentary shows events from the 2017 tragedy

HBO has released a trailer for their new documentary, Undercurrent: The Disappearance of Kim Wall. The network has carefully chosen the list of issues they want to highlight. They recently added Evan Rachel Wood-starrer Phoenix Rising, a series on domestic violence survivors. Then there is The Crime of the Century about the opioid crisis. Let’s learn more about Kim Wall.

The two-part series details events in Swedish freelance journalist Kim Wall’s life that led to her disappearance in 2017. Wall is last seen boarding a submarine in Denmark with entrepreneur Peter Madsen as part of his interview. Madsen wa a popular entrepreneur at the time, often called a “Danish Elon Musk.” After submerging, it didn’t return to the dock. It is next spotted in Køge Bay. Wall’s body got discovered in the wreck, and Madsen got charged and convicted for her murder. However, Madsen didn’t make it easy, and changed the story three times. He finally pleaded guilty in 2020.

In the trailer, we hear Kim’s close associates describing the kind of news she covered. A friend comments, “She was just doing her job. Then she ran into a psychopath.” Known as “The Submarine Trial,” the case received lot of public attention in Denmark.

The two episodes will be titled “The Crime” and “The Punishment” respectively. One will tell the story of Kim’s disappearance, her last texts, and the efforts taken by friends and family to find her. The second episode will be about Madsen’s trial. The Danish media got heavy criticism at the time for victim-blaming in their articles.

We will see new interviews from Kim’s colleagues, and trial testimonies. Even new audio from Madsen is present. The series is comes from Emmy-nominated director Erin Lee Carr. The two episodes will be available together on Tuesday, March 8.
