After the secret ops stories, Rainbow Six is taking a more sci-fi-based direction with Rainbow Six Extraction
The Rainbow Six franchise began in the late ’90s, and told stories based on the best-selling novels by Tom Clancy. While it never stood in the frontlines along with popular first-person shooters like Battlefield or Call of Duty, it did get a huge fanbase, and had many successful spin-offs. Along with the Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell games, Rainbow Six continues to be a beloved title in the gaming world.
What’s new
But with Rainbow Six Extraction, the franchise is taking a huge step towards science-fiction. Instead of battling secret government organizations, players will have to fight against legions of alien invaders called Archaeans. With just one month left for release, here is how the game plays out.
Humanity is facing a global threat, and the eponymous Rainbow counterterrorism unit has provided a new division called REACT to battle the new enemies. Players will get to control Operators, who in turn control teams. In the trailers we have been seeing since early 2021, numerous weapons, modes, character classes, and enemies were shown. The operators and aliens have unique abilities that can change the gameplay. This includes holographic weapons and heartbeat sensors.
However, where it differs from the other FPS games is the lack of health regeneration. Health packs are also scarce, and this leads to a more scary and slow-paced gameplay. The franchise’s signature stealth becomes key here.
Name changes
Rainbow Six Extraction wasn’t even meant to be a Rainbow Six game in the first place. It was originally named Pioneer, a name that was mentioned in the fellow Ubisoft title Watch Dogs 2. It then came to be known as Rainbow Six Quarantine. But since that would possibly count as insensitive due to the current world crisis, it got renamed to Rainbow Six Extraction.
The game is all set to come out on January 20, 2022.
