What is Nick Fury planning with the Skrulls?
Two days ago, we got to have a look at some major announcements from Disney+ regarding their upcoming Marvel shows. Among that, we got to see a glimpse of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, and what looked to be Queen Veranke from the Secret Invasion series.
The series was first announced last December, and was told to be a team-up story of former S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury and the Skrull named Talos, played by Ben Mendelsohn. The Skrulls debuted in Captain Marvel and have remained since then.
Past appearances
Aside from Captain Marvel, the Skrulls made appearances in Spider-Man: Far From Home where Talos and his partner Soren (Sharon Blynn) changed into Fury and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders). They were the one who instructed Peter Parker (Tom Holland) to fight monsters in the movie. The Skrulls reappeared at the end of WandaVision where they recruited Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) for a special mission.
The comic
We know that the MCU adapts iconic stories, and forms their own in the process. They can follow a similar pattern for the Secret Invasion as well, taking inspiration from the eight-issue 2008 comic. in the story, the Skrulls have replaced many of the existing superheroes with imposters over a period of years, as they prepare for a massive invasion.
However, in the comics, superheroes like Iron Man, Mister Fantastic, Namor, Black Bolt, Professor Charles Xavier, and Doctor Strange join together to form a group called the Illuminati as a secret counterattack against the Skrulls.
But what’s different is that the MCU showed the Skrulls as allies to Earth, and were fighting off the Kree. Therefore, it has chances to show a story of Fury and Talos teaming up to fight a rogue Skrull faction, or them teaming up to fight some other threats.
Secret Invasion will premiere in Disney+ sometime in 2022.
