DC FanDome had plenty of Milestone Media content for us
We are finally getting content from the Dakota Universe or Dakotaverse. A Milestone animated film based on the iconic Milestone Comics characters is in the works. The movie is backed by Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
The project was announced by producer Reggie Hudlin and co-founder Denys Cowan at the DC FanDome. It was announced among other new projects. A new program to help new talents kickstart their careers in the comic industry was also announced.
About the movie
Cowan didn’t reveal the plot, but shared that it will focus on multiple characters. The city of Dakota and its heroes were part of DC Comics for a long time and were part of many crossovers. However, these heroes haven’t been part of any animation in 17 years. The last character to have their own show was Static Shock in the 2000 Static Shock animated series.
The comics had a rough period in the ’90s, and many series and comics were cancelled due to low sales. Due to its predominantly Black characters, it was believed to not attract non-Black readers. But things changed after 2008, when Dakota City was incorporated into New Earth and all the Milestone characters became official DC members. Static Shock was featured as a member of the Teen Titans afterwards.
The Milestone Initiative
We now have a major collaboration between Milestone and Ally, called The Milestone Initiative. The main goal of the initiative is to bring the next generation of content creators and have them undergo seminars and intensive training with legendary creators and artists.
