On the anniversary of Virgil Abloh’s passage, Serena Williams paid homage to him

On the first anniversary of her friend Virgil Abloh’s passing, Serena Williams was seen paying tribute to him. Williams and Abloh enjoyed a really unique bond. When he worked with Nike to create a collection in her honour, it marked their first joint venture in 2018.

Following the designer’s death from cancer in November last year at the age of 41, the tennis champion expressed gratitude to him on Monday.

Williams shared a nostalgic black-and-white snapshot of her and Abloh from a Nike campaign photo shoot on Instagram to express her sorrow over the passing of the influential fashion figure.

She further stated that his impact on the world will last forever and that she is beyond glad to have experienced it and had the opportunity to work with him. She wrote that it has been a year and she is still unable to express the grief she feels. She went on to say that she still continually misses him.

Williams expressed her sorrow for not doing as Virgil had instructed her to do and for passing up the chance to wear one of Abloh’s most daring creations—the initial boundary-pushing outfit he created for her to wear at the 2019 French Open. She claimed that she wasn’t bold or self-assured enough to wear his original designs at the time.

One year after sporting an iconic black Nike catsuit, Serena Williams opted to don an Abloh-designed matching top, sports skirt, and printed-cape jacket.

But she made sure to admit her error to Abloh when she next encountered him after the 2019 Open. She admitted that she simply lacked the courage necessary to exit the train like a Met Gala at the French Open while standing out in the middle of all that red clay.

Serena Williams joined Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Helena Christensen, and Amber Valletta in February, four months after the designer expired, to walk the runway in the designer’s memory during Paris Fashion Week.
