Rurouni Kenshin is returning with a new anime in 2023! The beloved series from Nobuhiro Watsuki was officially renewed for a new season during the Aniplex Online Fest 2022 on Saturday, and a new trailer, key visuals, the staff, and the main cast were also revealed.
Rurouni Kenshin Renewal Details
The new series will be adapted from the work that Watsuki and his wife/story collaborator Kaoru Kurosaki’s Rurouni Kenshin: Hokkaido Arc that was released in 2017. The series premiered in Shueisha’s Jump SQ in September 2017. However, it had to be put on pause after Watsuki was charged with possessing child pornography in December 2017. It continued publication in June 2018. The manga’s seventh compiled volume came to an end on May 2, 2022.
Rurouni Kenshin began serialization in 1994, with over 72 million copies sold worldwide. It tells the story of Kenshin Himura, a deadly assassin who operated during the Meiji Restoration, but now wants to leave his violent life behind and make an honest living. It’s success ensured in it getting a 95-episode anime series, an anime movie, three original anime projects, a stage musical, as well as five live-action films.
Cast and Crew
Rurouni Kenshin will be animated by LIDEN FILMS, and directed by Hideyo Yamamoto (Cells at Work! Code Black, Strike the Blood), with character designs done by Terumu Nishii. Series composition will be done by Hideyuki Kurata, with Yu Takami composing the music.
Kenshin Himura will be voiced by Sōma Saitō and Kaoru Kamiya will be voiced by Rie Takahashi. The trailer showed Himura carving a bloody path along the soldiers from the opposition when he suddenly comes across Kaoru, who challenges him to a fight. Check out the trailer below!
