The former first lady, Michelle Obama, makes her second sitcom appearance
Beloved ABC sitcom Black-ish has reached its final chapter. But it sure seems to be going out with a bang as an A-list guest star just revealed herself.
Former first lady Michelle Obama has announced that she will appear in one episode of the eighth and final season of the show. She said that she will be playing herself, but her role in the story is kept under wraps for now.
A fan of the show
Michelle announced on social media that she had been a fan of the show’s wit and all-around brilliance, and it was a thrill to be part of an episode. In case many aren’t aware, this will be the second time that Michelle has starred in a sitcom. She had a cameo in the sixth season finale of Amy Poulter-starrer Parks and Recreation. The season aired when Barack was still President of the United States.
Both Michelle and Barack Obama also have overall deals with Netflix via their production house Higher Ground Productions. They have rolled out documentaries like American Factory and Crip Camp, kids’ shows Ada Twist, Scientist and We the People, and feature films Fatherhood and Worth.
Black-ish had had other political figures appearing in previous seasons. Former Member of Georgia House of Representatives Stacey Abrams, Los ANgeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, and former Obama Adviser David Axelrod have also had cameos on the show. Aside from being a sitcom, Black-ish had addressed various social issues, and about Black culture.
A bittersweet finale
During his appearance at the Primetime Emmys, lead stars Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis-Ross had spoken that shooting the finale will be bittersweet. Series creator Kenya Barris had a similar opinion, and said that the show had greatly changed his life. He expressed his thanks to both ABC as well as the amazing cast for being able to close the chapter in the right way.
