The series is getting a 2022 release
The Idol is an upcoming HBO drama from Sam Levinson, showrunner of the hit Euphoria. The series stars Abel Tesfaye, popularly known as The Weeknd, and Lily Rose-Depp, model, actor, and the daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis. The first teaser gives us a look into the tone of the series, which is very similar to that of Euphoria. Let’s read in detail.
About The Idol
The Idol can be explained to be a mix of Euphoria and another HBO series – The Deuce, by David Simon and George Pelecanos. The series reveals what goes on in the music industry. While the trailer did not give away much details about the story, we have been made aware that the show will tell the story of a rising pop idol getting into a relationship with a self-help guru, who is the leader of a modern-day cult. The Weeknd will play the cult leader, and Rose-Depp will be the pop star.
Additionally, The Weeknd is also a co-creator on the show, along with Levinson and Reza Fahim. The ‘Starboy’ hitmaker’s previous on-screen appearance was a cameo as himself in Adam Sandler’s Uncut Gems.
Other Cast and Crew Members
The Idol will also star Debby Ryan, Troye Sivan, Steve Zissis, Rachel Sennott, and Melanie Liburd. Levinson and HBO has teamed up once again with A24 for the show’s production, along with Little Lamb and Bron Creative. The show faced a few delays after original director Amy Seimetz dropped out over creative differences, and extensive reshoots and casting changes took place.
We are yet to know the official release date of The Idol, but it can be announced in the coming month, along with a new poster. But seeing as the teaser showed ‘Coming Soon,’ a 2022 release date is confirmed.
