Why Won’t Namor Get a Solo Movie After Black Panther: Wakanda Forever?

MCU producer Nate Moore is here to discuss

While we haven’t seen the last of Namor after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, it is hardly unlikely that we will see him as the lead in his own movie. MCU producer Nate Moore explains in a recent interview why the ruler of Talokan will not get a solo outing.

In an interview with The Wrap, Moore spoke about the legal issues that stand in the way of a solo Namor film. Similar to the Hulk, the character is owned by Universal, and has essentially been borrowed by Marvel Studios. This means the character can not only have his own movie but also cannot appear on his own in any promotional material unless it is for a character poster released as part of a larger set of posters.

But Moore said that Namor will still appear in future projects of the MCU. Speaking of the legal situation, the producer said it is difficult for them to market the character and film, and they couldn’t change the character a great deal. However, they did get to change his origins, aside from drawing a lot of inspiration from the comics. He then went on to praise director/co-writer Ryan Coogler for his excellent interpretation of the character and his people.

The Rights Issue

As mentioned earlier, Namor isn’t the only character held back by rights. During the later ’90s, when Marvel began selling screen rights for their characters, there was a huge scramble for them. Sony nabbed Spider-Man, Fox got the Fantastic Four and X-Men, and Universal got Namor and Hulk. While the Hulk can now appear in MCU projects, Universal still has a hold on the leash. This is why The Incredible Hulk, along with Jon Watts’ Spider-Man trilogy are not available for streaming on Disney+ and can be found instead on Netflix.
