How far will you go to survive?
The official trailer for Sony‘s live-action adaptation of novel Where The Crawdads Sing is out. The best-selling novel by Delia Owens came out in 2018, and became a massive hit. But the movie has a few other exciting features as well. It is backed by Reese Witherspoon and her Hello Sunshine productions along with 3000 Pictures. And finally, Taylor Swift has come forward with a haunting original song, further making the movie stand out.
About Where The Crawdads Sing
The novel was adapted by Lucy Alibar and directed by Olivia Newman. Our lead is Kya (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a young lady living in the deep marshlands of North Carolina. The story takes place between 1952 and 1969, in the fictional town of Barkley Cove. Kya’s life is turned upside down when she becomes the prime suspect in the murder of her ex-love interest.
The trailer opens in a court, and we see Kya, also known as “the marsh girl.” She had a mother long ago, but gets left behind. Afterwards, she sells mussels for a living. She is ostracized by the other girls in her school and ends up being more alone. But as she grows up, her mysterious aura catches the attention of two young men. However, when one of them is found dead at the bottom of a fire tower, she is tracked down by authorities and soon arrested. She can only rely on her own inner wildness to survive.
Why it is promising
The novel was surely promising, and the trailer and song by Swift certainly draws further interest. Edgar-jones is a BAFTA and Golden Globe Award nominated actress, and will nail the role without a doubt. Book adaptation are usually hit or miss, but somehow this novel is more promising. Don’t miss to watch Where The Crawdads Sing as it debuts in theatres on July 2022.
