Garfield was last seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Tick, Tick…Boom!
The trailer of FX crime thriller Under the Banner of Heaven is out, and it looks chilling. The series also marks the return of Andrew Garfield to the small screen. Garfield is going through a renaissance period due to his recent return as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. He is also nominated for an Oscar in Netflix’s Tick, Tick…Boom! With this show, we will see Garfield enter into True Detective mode.
In the series, Garfield stars as Detective Pyre, a cop from Utah who is deeply committed to his faith and family. He comes to Mormon while investigating a double murder, and comes in contact with the local church. However, his meeting with a suspected murderer makes him question some of the church’s teachings. A chilling and dark atmosphere is maintained throughout the year, with single shots on the prominent characters.
The show has Normal People star Daisy Edgar-Jones as Brenda, one of the victims of a brutal murder. Additional cast members include Sam Worthington, Wyatt Russell, Gil Birmingham, Denise Gough, Billy Howle, Rory Culkin, Adelaide Clemens, Sandra Seacat, Chloe Pirrie, Seth Numrich, and Christopher Heyerdahl.
Under the Banner of Heaven comes from Oscar-winning Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black. It is based on the best-selling true-crime novel by Jon Krakauer. Executive producers include Black, Ron Howard, and Brian Grazer.
Black spoke about producers FX and Imagine, and thanked them for adapting this story. He himself was raised in the LDS faith, as in the story. With the series, they hope to shed light on the brutalities committed in God’s name.
Under the Banner of Heaven will air in Hulu later this year.
