The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Review: A Heartfelt Gift to End the Year

Marvel’s Phase 4 has now concluded

While the Guardians of the Galaxy has not arrived in a solo movie since 2017, the crew has been part of a lot of crossovers. We saw them last in Thor: Love and Thunder, and their story will be concluding next year. But before that, they are here to bring the season’s greetings and also to conclude Phase 4 of the MCU with The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Let’s see how it fared.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Story

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special sees Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) being sad about the death of Gamora. To bring some cheer to their leader, Drax (Dave Bautista) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) decide to bring him a special gift – his lifelong hero, Kevin Bacon, from Footloose. Off they head to Eath to find Bacon and bring in other surprises along the way.

So far, Phase 4 has received a lot of criticism for lacking focus, having poor CGI, and a great overall downgrade in terms of quality. But The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special works well because it’s a special and isn’t tied to any other story. It is reminiscent of the first film when the characters weren’t widely known, and therefore, Gunn had more freedom.

Drax and Mantis are also funny characters, and seeing them attempt to kidnap Kevin Bacon, or seeing characters dressed as the Avengers in the streets, or having a riot at a gay bar, brings all the laughs. The newest Guardians member, Cosmo the Space Dog, is introduced in the special, and Maria Bakalova voiced her to perfection.

In Conclusion

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is a wonderful and heartfelt story, and the genius mind of James Gunn is at play here. While it follows the usual PG-13 rating, it contains some pretty wild jokes. Of course, music plays an important role for these heroes, and this time, it’s Christmas-themed.

So watch out for The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special coming to Disney+ on November 25.
