Peacemaker Season Two Announced by James Gunn Ahead of Season 1 Finale

Peace was never an option

We are hours away from the finale of Peacemaker season one, but there’s already big news. Series showrunner James Gunn has officially renewed Peacemaker for a second season. The Suicide Squad spin-off starring John Cena in the lead became a huge success, and every episode brought in more action and comedy.

Peacemaker picks off 5 months after the events of The Suicide Squad, and we see that Christopher Smith is recovered. Smith expected to be thrown back in prison after his botched mission, but got re-enlisted by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). He is now part of a special mission called Project Butterfly.

The team was a black ops squad headed by a mysterious mercenary named Clemson Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji). It also has A.R.G.U.S. agents Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), John Economos (Steve Agee), and a newbie named Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks). Later, Peacemaker’s so-called “best friend” Adrien Chase, aka Vigilante (Freddie Stroma) also joins the team.

The show was a critical success and brought in a large number of viewers to HBO Max. Gunn expressed his gratitude to the cast, producers, and audiences for ensuring the renewal.

Let’s take a look at Peacemaker‘s achievements. Since its premiere in January, Peacemaker became the best-reviewed DCEU title to date. It managed to beat 2017’s Wonder Woman and won 94% approval from critics. It also beat other in-demand titles such as Disney+’s The Book of Boba Fett, and is 69.5 times more popular than the average show.

The cast and crew were also enthusiastic about a possible return, and various reports suggested a renewal in January. However, it could take a while because Gunn is headed to shoot Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He hinted that Peacemaker season 2 will involve a mystery character.

Catch the first season on HBO Max.
