Zuko Liu is keen on making sure he does the character justice
Netflix is developing an Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series. The beloved series ran from 2005-2008 and continues to have a strong fan base. It has cast Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, and Dallas Liu as Zuko.
Now Liu has opened up about the pressure of starring in a series of this magnitude and playing a fan favourite character like Zuko.
Who is Dallas Liu?
Liu is a 20-year-old up-and-coming actor and has now landed some prominent roles. He has starred in Tekken, PEN15, and most recently on Shangh-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. This is a major accomplishment at such a young age. But he’s about to take on his biggest challenge yet. Not only is the animated show a big hit, but the previous adaptation by M. Night Shayamalan was a disaster. Dev Patel played Zuko in the 2010 film, and while he’s a great actor, he wasn’t the right person for the role.
Liu’s interview
Liu opened up about his upcoming role during an interview with ComicBook. He said that he has faith in the project, but knows that it’s no small feat to reboot a series with such a huge fanbase. The anime and comic-book community can be one of the most critical viewers, and any misstep can be judged harshly. Zuko and his firebending is still talked about, and his redemption arc was one of the best of the series.
But Netflix has done a great job in casting as the cast are around the same ages and ethnicity of the original characters. Liu has resemblence to his character, and his acting and martial arts skills look promising as well.
