An investigation has been launched by the company after allegations that a company employee was selling rare FIFA Ultimate Team cards
Electronic Arts Sports has confirmed that they’re investigating the current scandal regarding FIFA where an employee was accused online of selling FIFA Ultimate Team Player cards for real money. After fans of the sports game clamoured online accusing the employee of cheating them, EA was forced to look into the matter, and now an official investigation is taking place.
The Team Player cards
FIFA Ultimate Team Player cards is a major revenue generator for EA. The Ultimate Team Player mode has been there in the FIFA franchise for a few years now, and most players buy the latest version of the game just to continue playing this mode. The mode allows players to spend in-game currency and real-world money for buying collectible cards based on real-life pro players, which can then be used to create makeshift teams and compete against other players.
EA announced that they’re actively investigating the scandal over the weekend. Following the allegations happening on social media, EA and FIFA’s developers have suspended all discretionary content granting indefinitely.
How the system works
The system that EA has is one that allows FIFA‘s developers to hand out specific players in-game rewards for Ultimate Team Player. Usually this feature is used to give players cards as an apology for technical issues or accidental item deletion, a system that is implemented in most multiplayer games. EA also uses thus feature to give free content to famous game influencers. It’s believed that thie alleged employee/culprit has used this method to transfer rare FUT cards into the buyer’s account.
