The news of Leah Remini’s series Scientology and the Aftermath coming to an end shocked a few fans. But it looks like the show will be getting embroiled in controversies.
What happened?
The latest news coming in is that Danny Masterson and the Church of Scientology are being sued. As announced by the network, the last episode will dig into the allegations against the former star of That ’70s Show and The Ranch.
Masterson’s allegations will be used as a jumping point. The final episode will also deal with other assault allegations within the church. Besides that, it will further showcase the official policies against reporting them.
The series first premiered in 2016. It became an instant hit and earned several Emmy nominations according to the New York Post.
Remini claims that the show was never planned to go on for a couple of seasons. But the success it received helped it going.
She had earlier told The Post that the experience is “emotionally draining” for her, given the subject and her own personal connection.
The Lawsuit
The lawsuit filed against the Church and Masterson includes alleged stalking and harassment by members of the church. The four women behind the lawsuit have accused Masterson of rape in the past. This sparked the ongoing investigation against the actor.
Two of the women in the suit chose to remain anonymous. Three of them are former members of Scientology themselves. They alleged that they were targeted for harassment for going public with their allegations.
Since the investigation is still underway, Master was fired from his role on the Netflix series The Ranch where Ashton Kutcher also co-starred.
In addition to that, the actor was also let go by his agents at United Talent Agency.
The alleged attempts to cover up Masterson allegations on-air has not happened the first time. According to Daily Beast, another planned episode was shelved in February 2019 according to The Daily Beast.
Scientology has denied many of the claims in the lawsuit.
It is not yet known if the planned episode from February will be the last episode or if it will be edited to fit a new plan.
The two-hour finale of Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath will air on A&E Monday, Aug. 26 at 9 p.m. ET.
