About Welcome to Wrexham
Welcome to Wrexham follows the Wrexham Red Dragons, a team that is in the National League, the 5th tier of the English Football League. Despite being the oldest professional football club in the world, the team is struggling. It got purchased by McElhenney and Reynolds in November 2020, under their joint company RR McReynolds Company LLC. In February 2021, they became the owners.
Of course the two actors have no experience in coaching, much less running a professional football team. Nor have they ever worked together before. But both Ryan and Rob believed that they can bring the Welsh underdogs certain victory. Welcome to Wrexham will follow the two actors trying to bring the team back to its former glory, and make sure that the rest of the world sees them.
Did they turn the team around?
But two actors with no football experience purchasing an entire club did come with its set of questions. It was even made into a joke in Apple series Ted Lasso. But the actors assured everyone repeatedly that they will turn the team around, and they did. In the 2019-2020 season, the team came in 20th spot. But it showed a tremendous improvement after coming in at Number 8 in the 2020-2021 season. And now, the team is at Number 2 in the National League.
Reynolds and McElhenney will also be producers for the series. Welcome to Wrexham will start with the first two episodes on August 24 on FX. It will be available on Hulu on August 25.
