Fans’ love for Obi-Wan was proved with the massive opening weekend numbers
Obi-Wan Kenobi has officially beaten The Mandalorian in setting the record for higher views! Why is this so important? Well, The Mandalorian was the biggest show on the newly-launched platform, and even the various content from Marvel Studios were not able to beat it until Loki arrived. When season 2 of The Mandalorian came, it once again showed the impact Star Wars holds, despite the recent movies not working out. But now that Obi-Wan Kenobi has arrived, things have changed.
Obi-Wan Kenobi Numbers
The first two episodes were released on Disney+ at the same time, and hence followed the biggest opening premiere to date. Disney didn’t reveal the numbers like Netflix does, but they did say it was the most globally-watched premiere in their history. They calculate it by the hours it was streamed on the service. Before this, the title was held by Loki‘s premiere episode. However, it seems Disney has used new metrics for measuring the success of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
But here is an important factor: All Marvel shows including Loki were released every Wednesday. Meanwhile, The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan were released on Fridays. And they chose a very good time as it was Memorial Day Weekend and more viewers will be tuning in to watch shows.
The Excitement Surrounding The Show
Despite the metrics, it’s easy to say that the character played by Ewan McGregor holds a special place in the hearts of fans. The prequel movies which starred him and Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader did not receive support at the time, but they slowly gained appreciation over the years.
Also, Obi-Wan Kenobi shows the character in a more pessimistic light, as someone who is forced to come out of hiding after the kidnapping of Leia Organa.
The first two episodes are available to stream on Disney+ with episode 3 coming out on Friday, June 3.
