Introducing the new kid in the block
All eyes are on Netlix’s Korean drama Squid Game, and it’s breakout star Jung Ho-Yeon. The young Korean star’s debut role couldn’t have gone better, as she not only became an overnight sensation in Korea, but the rest of the world as well.
Squid Game is about a mysterious survival game that consisted of 456 debt-ridden contestants and a cash reward of 45.6 billion won (approx. $40 million). The contestants have to put their lives on the line for clearing each round of the deadly games. H-Yeon plays Sae Byeok, a North Korean defector who lived as a pickpocket to provide for her family.
The interview
On October 1, the actress sat down for a chat with Herald POP and discussed her present life.
She had started off as a model and was at New York for fashion week when the makers asked her to send over an audition clip. She had no idea about acting and sent a clip over. They then asked to see her in person so she flew back to Korea.
The success that the show earned is still unbelievable for her, and when asked if she wants to continue acting, she said she has no plans, but will make sure to improve on a daily basis.
She also mentioned about her long-time boyfriend Lee Dong-Hwi, whom she had been dating publicly since 2016. She added that he’s also an actor and was very proud of her role.
Friendship with Jennie
Jung Ho-Yeon is good friends with BLACKPINK’s Jennie. Jennie had sent over a coffee truck to the set of Squid Game, and even visited the set to cheer on her friend. She said that the K-pop star had actively cheered for her since she got casted and feels very grateful to her.
