They have come a long way since “Who is Shawn Mendes?”
Canadian musical icons Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber had quite a lot in common. Of course, both were Canadians, and became global sensations at a very young age as well. It started with Justin asking who Shawn Mendes was in 2015, to the duo becoming friends and finally dropping their collaboration track called “Monster” on November 20, 2020.
Questions have popped up asking if the two ever had a cold war between them. Let’s find out.
2015 to 2020
When Bieber asked that infamous question on Sept. 2015, Mendes’ career had just picked off, and he made sure to let everyone know that there were no hard feelings, and that he will just have to let Bieber know who he is.
Mendes never let comparisons between him and Bieber let him down. On June 2018, he addressed the comparisons and his ex-girlfriend Hailey Baldwin’s relationship with the “Sorry” singer saying he loves them both and that they’re really awesome people. On being compared with Justin, he said it’s the best thing anyone could say to him and said Justin was “the man.”
On July 2018, Mendes made sure to congratulate Hailey on her engagement to Bieber, saying he personally texted her, and during an interview with Variety is August 2018, he praised the couple again.
On March 2019, a bit of trouble erupted when fans noticed Shawn’s like on Justin’s Instagram post about Hailey. Bieber jumped to his rescue and said they were just friends.
Mendes was named “The Prince of Pop” by Observer Magazine in April 2019. Bieber commented under the post saying that he needs to break more records to take that title from him and challenged him to a hockey match, which Mendes accepted.
It’s safe to say from all this that the two singers never really had any beef.
