Sony to Acquire Video Game Studio Bungie in $3.6 Billion Takeover

Microsoft will have interesting thoughts about Sony takeover

A massive, and also surprising takeover is happening right now. Bungie, the legendary studio behind games like Destiny and Halo will be acquired by Sony. The Washington-based studio had delivered these big hits for Sony’s rival Microsoft until now.

Bungie was acquired by Microsoft in 2000, but split from the group in 2007. However, Halo continues to be a Microsoft property and is now managed by their own 343 Industries.

We have had a few such acquisitions over the past year. Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard, the creator of Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Diablo for $69 billion. Take Two Interactive, who was behind all the GTA games until GTA 4 acquired FarmVille creator Zynga for $12.7 billion.

This, however, is no cause for concern. Bungie CEO Pete Parsons wrote in a blog post that they will continue to independently publish and creatively develop their games. He added that Sony is a partner that will support their every endeavor, and believes this is only the start of what’s to come. So Xbox or PC gamers, do not worry.

Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment said via the PlayStation blog that this deal will let them expand PlayStation to hundreds of millions of gamers.

Many gamers were still concerned after the deal, but Bungie had flatly told them that it won’t become a PlayStation exclusive. They want to keep their belief that games should be enjoyed across multiple platforms and gamers to have the same experience anywhere.

Sony’s shopping spree began last year and shows no sign of stopping. They acquired Housemarque, the studio behind Returnal, and also Bluepoint Games, who were behind the Demon’s Souls remake.
