Greta Gerwig made them do exercises

Gerwig in an interview told PEOPLE magazine that she let the actors reach a comfortable space with each other before engaging them in work. She has them doing some sort of fun exercises so they reach a state where they trust each other.

She further said that then the actors are not afraid of looking foolish in front of the camera. She also said that at some point all of the acting makes you look foolish and you can’t look cool all the way down.

The numerous exercises she has them do is to get them out of their head and also to warm up their body and their vocals. Chalamet also performed a memorable monologue from his high school during one of their exercises.
