Returning to your roots is always a surreal experience. Being at a place where we have been before in a different role, in a different time as a different person is something we always cherish, and that’s what Jeff Capel felt as he visited Duke.
Felton Jeffery Capel III fondly called Jeff Capel returned to Duke University but as a visitor this time. The 44-year-old American college basketball coach is a former player From Duke University.
He was welcomed by the student section in the stadium who were elated to see their alumni there at the match. With 38 seconds remaining in the first half of the match, the Cameron Crazies, Duke’s famous student section, started chanting, “Jeff Capel, sit with us,” they repeatedly chanted, directing it at Jeff, who is Pitt’s second-year coach, a former Duke player, and assistant coach.
Disappointment enveloped him as his team lost, but certainly, he cherished the opportunity that came with it; being able to visit the same stadium as a coach where he was once a player.
Talking about the experience, Capel said, “It was great being back, to be honest with you.”
“We came in here last night and shot a little bit,” he said elaborating on his visit, “It was a little weird walking in here in a completely different entrance, being dropped off at a different place and just being here not with Duke.”
Capel wasn’t there as a part of Duke, but as a coach of the opponent, talking about the competition, he said, “Once competition starts, man, it’s competition.” In the end, he said that it was great for him to see so many familiar faces, people that he cares about and those people that care about him. “That was really cool,” he signed off.
