God of War Ragnarök Review: The Franchise’s Finest Game is Here

Take a ride with Kratos and Atreus in one of the most emotional and stunning modern games

“We must be better.” That is the line that Kratos tells his son Atreus in 2018’s God of War. That simple, but the heavy line stayed throughout the story and is now the core of the sequel, God of War: Ragnarök. Santa Monica Studios, the creators, have made the game better in every way we can imagine.

Kratos, our titular God of War, has had a very painful and violent history. He has spilled an ocean’s worth of blood as he ascended the Greek pantheon and murdered all the gods brutally, including his father Zeus. But in the 2018 sequel, we saw possibly the biggest change ever in a video game character. The older Kratos is wiser, more compassionate, and a lot less bloodthirsty. This continues to God of War Ragnarök. Kratos continues to teach his son Atreus, or the Norse God Loki, to reach his full potential.

Without sharing spoilers, we will tell the premise. God of War Ragnarök is set three years into a Fimbulwinter, the fated cold that comes between Ragnarok, the cataclysmic battle. In this time, Atreus has traveled the realm, wanting to know why he was called Loki in prophecy, while Kratos is preparing his son for battle. We see the fear in Kratos’ eyes throughout most of the game.

God of War Ragnarök hasn’t taken a major leap when it comes to gameplay. There are slight changes, and some might feel that it could be a PlayStation 4 game. There are more side missions, however, and areas can be explored in leisure.

But in the end, many of us wanted to see the story that this father and son took, and that is where the game truly shines. So get ready for the greatest adventure yet.

God of War Ragnarök releases worldwide on November 9.
