The finale of season 1 warranted more from Space Iron Man (Spoilers ahead)
Space Iron Man will get his own episode in What If…? season 2. In the final episode of season 1, we see a glimpse of Tony Stark in a high-tech space armor fighting next to Gamora on planet Nidavellir. For those who are not aware, Nidavellir was first referenced in the MCU in Avengers: Infinity War and is the place where the Infinity Gauntlet, and Thor’s Stormbreaker was forged. Iron Man and Gamora manage to destroy the gauntlet in this reality. Afterwards, Gamora gets recruited by Uatu the Watcher to his Guardians of the Multiverse.
An episode that had to be pushed
In an interview with Variety, the show’s headwriter A.C. Bradley revealed that the pandemic affected one of their episodes. The episode was meant to be fun and light-hearted, with Stark at the lead. The episode had to be pushed to season two because it didn’t get finished in time. He hopes that fans get to enjoy it next year.
One of the criticisms that What If…? faced was the death of Tony Stark multiple times. He dies a total of four times. Since he had a major role till his death in Avengers: Endgame, the creator opted to put more focus on other characters.
Space Iron Man’s history
There were multiple references to Space Iron Man in the MCU. One of his armors in Iron Man 3 was revealed to be the space suit. Many thought at that time that it meant he would join the Guardians of the Galaxy, as it was set to release the following year. While that did not happen, the theory seems to take flight with the next season of What If…?.
