“I was an incredible gift attendant,” Julie Dawn Cole, who played Veruca Salt in the 1971 exemplary dream film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
The first cast of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory got their hands on some invaluable memorabilia while shooting — more than fifty years prior!
Commending the dream film’s 50th commemoration and the arrival of its 4K Ultra HD version this week, the four enduring previous kid entertainers in the Gene Wilder-drove 1971 work of art — Peter Ostrum (Charlie Bucket), Julie Dawn Cole (Veruca Salt), Paris Themmen (Mike Teevee) and Michael Bollner (Augustus Gloop) — visited with PEOPLE about a portion of the treats they had the chance to keep from the sugar-bound set.
“I kept a couple of props,” shares Cole, 63, a psychotherapist who worked routinely on TV subsequent to playing Veruca and distributed a diary named I Want It Now! in 2016 about her experience on Wonka. “At that point, everything was simply being discarded and destroyed. Also, I didn’t have my mother out with me on the spot, so I was an extraordinary trinket manager.”
What’s more, as a present for her thirteenth birthday celebration, Cole — whose bratty person is booted from the chocolate plant subsequent to singing about how she needs a secret weapon — uncovers she was given a brilliant egg.
Themmen, 61, discloses to PEOPLE that the cast (counting the late Denise Nickerson, who played Violet Beauregarde)
“They put a notice in a German paper that read, ‘Augustus, Show a Sign.’ And I don’t respond on Augustus, in light of the fact that the film [had come out] exactly 25 years [before that],” Bollner tells PEOPLE.
In the wake of getting him on the telephone, the cast entreated Bollner, 62, to come to Boston for a meeting, which was an amazement to the previous entertainer.
