The Not-So-Secret Life of Notifications

Attention is the main prize of the internet. Everyone is fighting for it, and the phone is the prime battleground. The most potent of weapons in this war is the incessant, whining notification trying to pull your attention away from whatever you are actually doing and into some other app.

The notification may also be a major source of modern technological madness, due to the harmful cognitive consequences of having one’s focus continually shattered and reset. A recent study found that a majority of users who made a deliberate choice to turn their notifications down as part of an enforced break were not likely to turn them back on. This got me wondering: What would happen if I cranked them in the opposite direction? What might I learn about how phones are reshaping minds? What might I learn about my own mind?

The Battle for Attention

The cognitive consequences of constant notifications are well-documented. Researchers have found that the mere presence of a phone can lead to decreased attention span, increased mind-wandering, and impaired cognitive performance. In other words, the constant stream of notifications can make us feel like we’re stuck in a never-ending loop of distractions.

The impact on productivity and focus is equally concerning. Notifications can disrupt our workflow, causing us to lose our train of thought and struggle to regain our momentum. This can lead to increased stress levels, decreased job satisfaction, and a general sense of overwhelm.

The Notification Epidemic

The rise of notifications in the digital age is a relatively recent phenomenon. In the early days of the internet, notifications were typically limited to email and maybe the occasional SMS message. However, with the advent of social media, news apps, and other online services, notifications have become a ubiquitous part of our daily lives.

The role of social media and news apps in the notification explosion cannot be overstated. These apps are designed to be constantly engaging, using algorithms to predict what we want to see and when we want to see it. This can lead to a never-ending stream of notifications, each one vying for our attention and disrupting our workflow.

The consequences of living in a world with constant notifications are far-reaching. We’re constantly feeling like we’re being pulled in multiple directions, struggling to keep up with the demands of our digital lives. This can lead to feelings of burnout, decreased well-being, and a general sense of disconnection from the world around us.

The Quest for Control

So, how can we regain control over our notifications and our lives? The answer lies in understanding the strategies for managing notifications on iOS devices.

    • Notification settings: Take control of your notifications by customizing your notification settings. Turn off notifications for apps that don’t need them, and adjust the timing and frequency of notifications for apps that do.
      • App profiles: Manage your app profiles to limit the number of notifications you receive. Remove unnecessary apps, and consider deleting apps that are no longer relevant to your life.
        • Technology: Use technology to your advantage. Consider using apps that help you manage your notifications, such as apps that allow you to schedule notifications or block distracting apps.

        The Apple Invites Experiment

For a few days a week on and off over the past month, I cranked notifications up to max. These were the ground rules I laid out to ensure I was getting the full, mind-splintering effect: Turn on all notifications for all apps, without exception. When a notification arrives, go straight to it and consider fully what it wants me to do, unless I’m driving or am otherwise completely indisposed.

Although I’m sure you can do this experiment with Android, I used an iPhone. Everyone’s app profile is different, but I’m close to a baseline profile: I use a mix of news, social, reading/writing and dating apps. I’m probably more slanted toward news than the average user.

        Push Hell

The first thing I noticed is that it actually takes some effort to enter Push Hell. You have to dig into settings, toggle notifications on, then go through your app list to make sure they’re on for each individual app. And then in some cases, you need to visit the apps themselves to make sure notifications are on inside of their own settings profiles.

The latest big version of iOS — iOS12 — was supposedly designed in part to help users limit and monitor their screen time. It changed notifications so that they would stack when they came from the same source (a feature that was already part of the Android experience). This doesn’t change notification frequency or obnoxiousness — it just makes them easier to sift through.

        News and Its Notifications

News notifications are sometimes news but usually not. Notifications for news apps seem like a good idea: Things are happening quickly, and you want to keep up. I get it. But after a few full days of news notifications, I quickly realized that most notifications are not “breaking news.” In fact, there’s no real logic about what qualifies as worthy of an alert.

I’ve gotten important breaking events, and I’ve gotten alerts that have yanked me out of work to tell me that downtown Indianapolis is going through an urban renewal. Recently, I had a brainstorming session interrupted for Google News to tell me the guy who played Big Bird is retiring.

        The iPhone 16 and Beyond

Apple is gearing up to launch the iPhone 16 on September 9th, so we’ve brought on Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman to chat about his scoops around Apple’s upcoming hardware. We should expect some notable additions, like a dedicated camera button, as well as slightly larger screens on the Pro models.

We’ll also dive into Apple’s robotics efforts — does anyone really want an Apple bot rolling around their home? Finally, we’ll discuss Gurman’s reporting around Meta’s upcoming devices: A cheaper Quest 3 model, as well as a glimpse at prototype AR glasses.

        The Future of Notifications

The evolution of notifications is a topic of great interest. How notifications are changing and what it means for us is a subject of ongoing debate.

        The Evolution of Notifications

The rise of AI-powered notifications is a relatively recent phenomenon. These notifications are designed to be more intelligent, using machine learning algorithms to predict what we want to see and when we want to see it.

The impact of voice assistants on notifications is also significant. With the rise of voice assistants like Siri and Alexa, notifications are becoming more conversational, with voice-activated commands and responses.

The future of notifications is uncertain, but one thing is clear: notifications are here to stay. The question is, how will we manage them in the future?

        The Importance of Balance

How to manage notifications in a world of constant distractions is a topic of great importance. The answer lies in finding a balance between notifications and our daily lives.

          • Staying focused: Use technology to your advantage. Consider using apps that help you stay focused, such as apps that block distracting websites or apps that help you stay on track.
            • Practicing self-care: Take breaks and practice self-care. Take time to relax, meditate, or engage in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment.
              • Setting boundaries: Set boundaries around your notifications. Turn off notifications when you’re not working or engaged in an activity. Set boundaries around your online presence, too.

              The Power of Choice

The power of choice is a topic of great importance. How we choose to manage our notifications is a reflection of our values and priorities.

                • Setting boundaries: Set boundaries around your notifications. Turn off notifications when you’re not working or engaged in an activity. Set boundaries around your online presence, too.
                  • Practicing self-care: Take breaks and practice self-care. Take time to relax, meditate, or engage in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment.
                    • Using technology wisely: Use technology wisely. Consider using apps that help you manage your notifications, such as apps that allow you to schedule notifications or block distracting apps.
